Mel B supports international fitness week

How are your fitness changes going as we head towards the end of International Fitness Week?

Why not get off the bus / tube a stop early and walk a little further.

Making the most of classes – we’ve all been there; gone to the same fitness class every week, seeing the same people for the past year but don’t seem to be making any progress.  What more can you do?  Below are my 5 tips for getting results from classes.

Tip 1: Plan your classes – always have your goals in mind

Know why you are going to the class and what you want to get out of it.  The harder you work, the better your results.

Tip 2 : Figure out what you like

If you enjoy cardio in the gym and are happy to do this on your own, choose a resistance class (body pump).  We all need a push and guidance to do the things we know we should do!  Alternatively, if you like resistance train you may want to participate in a spin class.

Tip 3 : Technique

I often see questionable technique in classes – the last thing anyone wants from any workout (class or not) is injury and / or pain.  Most instructors will provide less intense options for exercises, but if they don’t or you feel that you can’t do a particular exercise, just ask – that is what an instructor is there for.  Most gyms run technique classes which are great way to get the correct technique information you need or ask for a complimentary session with a trainer – they are there to help you.  Alternatively, show up to the class a few minutes early and talk to your instructor.

Tip 4 : Increase Resistance

Do not be afraid to increase the resistance in classes such as spin or RPM.  Too little resistance is the top reason for lack of results from classes.

Tip 5 : Variety is the spice of life

For continual results, always vary your classes.  We are creatures of habit so will stick with the same class year in year out…..yet we will moan about not getting any results!  Not varying classes is a huge mistake for 2 reasons:

  • It can lead to over-use injuries
  • The body will adapt to what you do, hence you get less and less results – it just needs a different stimulus to prompt change and result

Missed the previous three days?
