Is your belly fat or flat?

Beer belly. Love handles. Fat.

Whatever you want to call it, excess weight around your middle can be the most difficult weight on your body to lose.

It is also more dangerous to your health than those extra pounds that accumulate on your hips or thighs.

The fat around your belly is an outward sign of deep, internal fat surrounding your organs. Fat in this area causes an increase of hormones that raise blood pressure and increase bad cholesterol, putting you at risk for heart disease, stroke, and premature death.

Belly fat has also been linked to an increased risk of dementia, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, and metabolic syndrome.

What’s to blame for belly fat? Stress, age, poor lifestyle choices and genetics play a role—but so does your diet.

Here’s what not to eat and what to eat if you want to banish belly fat.

Recipe for a Fat Belly
It is fair to say that weight gain around your waistline and anywhere else on your body is caused by consumption of too many calories. That being said, there do seem to be certain foods and drinks particularly associated with an increase of fat cells in the abdominal area.

While you may use it jokingly, the phrase “beer belly” is an accurate description of what goes on when you down too much alcohol. Drinking too much may make it difficult to fasten your jeans. Why does this happen? When you drink alcohol your liver goes into overdrive to burn it off, when it should working to burn off the high fat content. Alcohol can also make you hungrier (I’m sure we’ve all experience the munchies on the way home), causing you to consume more calories than normal.

Foods containing trans-fat are another contributing factor to a larger waist. Trans-fat is a manmade fat created with partially hydrogenated oil. This unnatural fat leads to belly fat and moves fat from other parts of the body to the abdominal area. Where can you find trans-fat in your diet? Cookies, crackers, pastries, crisps, fried foods and packaged / processed foods all contain this unwanted intruder.

Sugar-sweetened beverages and fizzy drinks are another possible culprit for belly fat. The empty calories and high amount of high-fructose corn syrup (manmade sweetener) cause abnormal weight gain in the midsection. High-fructose corn syrup is also found in foods such as ketchup, mayonnaise, jam, tinned fruits, yogurt, bread, and even fruit juice.

Finally, refined, low-fiber grains are also responsible for belly fat. To avoid these skip foods such as white rice, white bread, and sugary cereals.

Recipe for a Flat Belly
Whittling your waistline starts with a lower-calorie, well-balanced diet and regular exercise. A recipe for a flat belly starts with a diet rich in fruits, veggies, low-fat dairy, whole grains, and lean meat. Moving toward a slimmer waistline also requires you to move away from the fatty foods and drinks listed above.

A truly flat belly comes from a combination of a consistent, challenging exercise routine coupled with clean eating.

Are you part of the Big Lunch In Wandsworth this weekend?

The Big Lunch takes part in Wandsworth this weekend and several roads will be closed – Battersea Park Road isn’t one of them so you can still come along for a workout! :) – Rosenau Crescent which is between Prince of Wales Drive and Battersea Bridge Road will be closed and that’s where we will go to join in the fun.

This is such a fabulous way of getting local people together to reconnect and enjoy getting to know each other. Years  being part of a local community was all about being friends with everyone on the street and spending time with neighbours it is such a shame it doesn’t happen as much anymore.

At least there is some effort to bring back the community feel which is one of the great things about living in Wandsworth and I hope this continues in our borough every year.

If you are taking part in the Big Lunch remember to keep your nutritional focus on some healthy and nutritious foods…!

You can find out more at the Wandsworth Guardian who are also looking for stories from the day.

Use Battersea Park to plan your walk

If you are due to take part in walk the walk at Battersea Park and you live in South West London this is an ideal opportunity for you to use the park as a measure of how well your fitness is improving.

When you join our gym in Clapham if you let us know you are taking part in this event and need support with your training we can guide you towards using the right equipment to ensure you are physically fit and ready on the day. When you go through your gym induction just let us know that the Battersea Park walk the walk event in July is one of your goals and we will focus on supporting you.

If you are part of a team working out together will help you stay motivated and taking part in our group personal training sessions can provide you with an opportunity to workout with a personal trainer while sharing the cost amoung your team. Click here to complete our enquiry form if you want more information on that.

To ensure you are in great shape on the day you will need to build strength and endurance using cardio machines like the treadmill and/or rowing machine along with adding weights to your workout.  As well as your gym workout you can also use Battersea Park and take regular walks. Set your goal for how far you want to be able to walk and within what time frame and then keep challenging yourself until you achieve it.

It is important that you have a plan of how far you want to walk each week and how long you want it to take you. If you are not meeting that goal we can help you figure out how to use the gym more effectively so you do.

Too many people register to take part in charity run and walk events out of the goodness of their heart but don’t train enough to ensure they are fit on the day to complete it. If you spend most of your working life at a desk your body will need some notice that you are about to put it through a few hours of walking! Rather than just leaving it for the day and suffering for days afterwards use your participation in this event to improve your health and fitness so you have fun on the day and you are not in pain for days after it.

Combining a gym workout with walks around Battersea Park is a great start and you will find that given time it will be quite easy for you to develop a real love for regular exercise if it isn’t something you regularly do right now.

The London Marathon is a week away – Are You Ready?

Following on from a previous post about the run up to the London Marathon it takes place on Sunday 17th April (not long at all) – how fit do you feel right now? Are you ready to run the 26.2 miles that it will take to finish? The wonderful thing about running the London Marathon is the fact that it is a wonderful mixture of different people from the serious competitor down to the novice charity fundraiser. Which are you?

If this is your first race I know the temptation is there to ramp up the training and cram as much running in as possible (why wouldn’t you in this lovely weather) but this is also prime time for any over-training, exhaustion or minor injuries to kick in so it’s not a winning fitness strategy.

The best thing to do in the week running up to the run is to stick with a few shorter runs to keep the momentum going, to eat right & often, and make the most of your rest times. Rest is just as important as training – you get the right amount of quality rest & sleep and you get great results.

If you are suffering from tight muscles (mainly calves!) why not try a few stretching sessions to release them or book yourself a gentle massage before the event. Mix this with good quality 8-hour sleeps and you will feel mentally & physiologically refreshed for the big day.

Why not come along to the gym in Clapham on Monday 18th for a 30 minute recovery & stretch session with us?

Simply click here to complete our enquiry form and we will get in touch with you or call us on 07958 953 9845 to arrange your complimentary session.
