Two for One!!! This week I got to train alongside Carol. I was pretty intimidated -her barbell snatches put me to shame! But it was actually really good. I could watch her technique and it really motivated me to work hard. I think training with someone else can really encourage you to put in that extra effort when you’re tired -it brings out the competitive side -you don’t want to be the first one to slack off!
We did a lot of work on landing jumps. In Davids words, which I’m going to steal as my own… “Fitness training is not all about building up muscles, it’s also about training your neurological system to respond quickly and in the correct manner.” It’s so important in sports such as Ultimate Frisbee which involve a lot of turning and jumping, but also others like basketball, rugby, hockey. The last thing I want to happen is to tear my ACL or any other injury in the run up to a big tournament!
We used this pretty cool piece of equipment which is basically a wide rope of elastic with a belt at one end which goes around your waist and then David holds onto the other. You have to jump forward from standing and work on a really good landing, without your knees dropping in. It feels really off balance at first so it makes you concentrate hard and there’s a fair bit of resistance so you have to work hard! The idea is that over time your body will learn to do it naturally -excellent! It was cool having Carol doing it too so I could see what to do [and what not to do
].
We also did some bench presses. I’d be far too scared to do them at a normal gym with all the massive guys watching / hogging the bench! And although they sound very ‘body-builder-y’ they were actually pretty fun, and important for shoulder strength.
Bring on next week!
