This week we catch up with Ellie and her training adventures of late.
Last weekend the Ultimate Frisbee club that I play for decided to enter 2 teams into the first National League tournament. One with the usual 15 players and one Savage team with only 7 players! That meant the entire weekend of six 70 minute games with no subs! Guess which team I was on…!It was an incredibly tough weekend. We came up against the German National team, who had come over for some pre-World Championship preparation, in the pool stages. We all really put everything into the game and amazingly won in sudden death!
On Saturday evening I was tired I thought I was going to cry. I forced myself to do the stretches I’d learnt. I guess they helped but I was still pretty stiff and sore Sunday morning! By our sixth and final game of the weekend I wasn’t sure I could do another sprint, but remembering all those 7am sessions with David and focusing on my form, we dug deep and won the game, finishing 3rd out of 20 teams. I was so happy and so thankful I’d put the effort into going to the classes!
Thankfully we had an easy session after that, doing lots of recovery stretches –how quickly you can recover is so important if you want to regularly perform at your best.
This week though we were back on it! We did lots of one legged squats and although I found the repetitiveness a little tedious, he broke it up with a circuit of different exercises and I know how important they are.
When he wheeled out the barbell with 40Kg on it and asked me to lie underneath I was a little worried… but it turned out to be for hip bridges. I loved it as I have struggled to find a good exercise to strength hamstrings –the machines at the gym are really bad for you. He even had a pad to go on the bar to make it comfortable!
Oh and did I mention, half the workout was done with a weighted vest on! It’s tough but when it’s power and speed you want, the only way to get stronger is to add weight not reps and so it’s perfect. And except a personal trainer, who else has weighted vests lying around??
